It’s tough to top a perfect regular season record.
Palo Verde High School’s boys’ and girls’ tennis teams will try to do just that after they both went 15-0 last regular season.
“Palo’s tennis teams have a long history of excellence,” said head coach Tyler Marchant. “They both have won several state championships in the school’s history.”
Both teams won the regional championships and continued their undefeated play throughout the playoffs to capture state championships last season.
The girls’ team topped Coronado High School after winning a close battle, 10-5.
The boys’ team had an easier path in downing Clark High School 10-2, without the need for playing the third round.
The boys’ team has won the last four state titles, and the girls’ team has taken two of the last 4 state championships.
The top returning girls’ players this fall season include Caroline Lemcke, Mia Hatfield, and Rozanne Okana.
The boys’ team boasts Chris Andre, Ryan Jensen, and Ethan Hsaio as top returners.
“Both squads have a lot of promise and talent for the future,” Marchant said.
In terms of individual play, the Panthers’ boys’ team has secured the last three state singles championships. The team’s boys’ doubles, girls’ singles, and girls’ doubles all finished second in the state title matches last year.
Palo Verde was the only school to compete in all four of the state championship matches. As a team, the boys finished 2nd in state. The girls took first.
